Nicky Haslam for OKA launch of new collection

I was fortunate enough to attend the launch of this most whimsical and delightful collection by the multi-talented Nicky Haslam (should be knighted, shouldn’t he?), the high priest of interior design whom I’d always wanted to meet. Born 1939, he is also a writer of two interior design books and an autobiography, a recording artiste, releasing his album (produced by David Ogilvy) ‘Midnight Matinee’ on Cherry Red Records this year. Being a writer and musician myself, of course I listened to Illusions and Total Control on Youtube. Bryan Ferry, Helena Bonham Carter, AN Wilson, Tracey Emin et al sing with Nicky on his album. I could name til I drop!

This is comfortable, painted, decorated furniture, so easy on the eye, it is hard to leave, but my parking was expiring, so I had to go. Each piece is like a little castle, so would not look out of place in, say, a castle. A chateau or a country house would also do. The visual treats of sturdy, classy OKA furniture is that it will blend into any interior. You can mix it in with your own old furniture and it won’t go wrong. It can be blended in with new sleek furniture too. The secret? No bright colours. No music. No furniture for children. Just calm, sea colours, palms, Chinese art and Indian fabrics. Your senses are on holiday.
